Learning Outcome #2
I think that in the second project I did in class I improved on choosing and integrating quotes as well as my analysis of the quotes. I used to struggle with which quotes to choose and my analysis of said quotes but I think that this class really helped me with that. Overall, I think what helped me the most was the techniques and templates provided by the “They Say I Say” book. There were so many examples of proper quote selection and integration that were very helpful. The templates they provided allowed me to plug in what I wanted to say and really helped me form cohesive quotes. I learned about quote integration in high school but I never really used it until we talked about it in class and the templates helped me visualize it. I have always struggled with the analysis of quotes and have always thought of that as the hardest part of writing an essay, but after the techniques described in the book and talking about it in class I feel I have a better sense of what it actually is. I think that this excerpt from my second project is a great example of my ability to select, integrate, and explain quotations. “Similarly, Turkle argues that phones create a disconnect between people and the real world. “We are forever elsewhere. At class or at church or business meetings, we pay attention to what interests us and then when it doesn’t we look to our devices to find something that does” (Turkle 344). Turkle argues that we use digital technology to distract ourselves when we are bored. We choose to disengage from situations that we are not interested in because it is so easy to distract ourselves with our phones. Turkle emphasizes that to be distracted by our phones is as if we are living in a different world. By not living in reality we miss out on so much, like forming meaningful connections and seeing the world from the perspective of others.” I think that this quote is relevant to what I was talking about in the paragraph about the distraction that our phones cause and how we are disconnected from one another. I think my integration does a good job of introducing the quote and setting it up. I also think that my analysis of the quote was pretty good. I did not just reword what Turkle said but expanded on it in my own way and how it relates to what I was talking about in the paragraph. I think that is really important when you are analyzing a quote and it is something that I think I still struggle with and could improve on even more.
